Employment in London in the 1980's enabled Edwin to learn paper restoration, colouring and framing techniques.
Process identification and paper characteristics which heavily influence restoration are vital to the buying of old paper and considerable time was spent in relevant research. We returned to Brisbane in 1989 and began offering antique maps and prints at Riverside Markets. To the many people who supported myself and my small family, I am most grateful. And while European and National tourists brought much of our production, it has been the local Brisbane community that has nurtured us in our obscure occupation. People such as Bob and Bradley Dean and Family who have supplied the art work of many of our limited edition maps. In particular I wish to thank Noel Goodyear and his family whose support and interest has enabled us to maintain our activities to the desired standard. Our tenure at Riverside (1989-2007) of around 19 years enabled us to place considerable resources into understanding and learning the process of producing images from grooved sheet metal (INTAGLIO ), a process that dominated the production of quality maps and prints from circa 1480 to around 1820. From the year 2000 on , we have been able to offer hand printed hand coloured limited editions of maps that have helped shape Australia and the region. Click Here to view the printing process.
These certified maps are guaranteed to have been printed using the old INTAGLIO tradition that for hundreds of years required a five year apprenticeship for one aspect of the process ( plate wiping ). The process can be authenticated at most art galleries enabling collectors to avoid mass produced items if they so wish.
Individualized hand colouring accentuates the uniqueness of each map and high quality paper ensures a life span above and beyond most expectations. ( With the right storage conditions, 300 - 400 years. ) From the time of initial production to the present we know of no other publisher in Australia specializing or producing traditionally printed maps from Australia's past.
Over the years we have also collected , restored and coloured many views of Australia and her near neighbours. In republishing them using modern processes we have aimed to cater for the decorators and researchers wanting to view their environment through the eyes of those who lived in the 18th and 19th centuries. This ever growing collection can be viewed by Clicking here and touring through the alphabetical list of towns.
Our display of antique maps was the central stand during the National Mapping Expo at the RNA. in 1999. The Mapping Sciences Institute (Qld Division ) have displayed a selection of our maps at the 2005 Map Seminar and Expo. In 2006 at Illustrator House at South Bank in Brisbane, Edwin was employed as a specialized sales advisor to a mapping Exhibition displaying antique maps valued in excess of $450,000. This collection, co-ordinated by Troy Hamilton-Irvine with Gowrie Galleries of Sydney, celebrated 400 years of Australian Mapping.
On the 6th of May 2008 I was fortunate enough to be involved in the filming of a segment for The Collectors television show on collectible maps. They focused on maps showing the first sightings of Australia , followed by charts of Cook and Flinders.
